The Hill Country SPCA started a Summer Camp program in June of 2016. The summer program, appropriately named “Critter Camp”, provides a fun learning experience in a week-long session designed for kids ages 6-12 years, held Monday-Friday from 8:30am-1pm.
Last year, campers got to know a wide variety of animals, from companions like Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, and Ferrets, to getting to go offsite to the Brickner Ranch and see Lemurs, Zebras, Peacocks, and even a Tiger! The last day of camp the owners of Hill Country Trail Rides brought horses down for the kids to learn about and even ride. They got to go behind the scenes at the Hill Country SPCA, into areas not seen by the public, to learn about the plight of shelter pets, and how they are cared for. Campers also learned to create animal-themed arts and crafts projects to help enrich the lives of shelter pets. Through fun and engaging activities, they learned about responsible pet ownership, animal care, dog training, and about animals from all corners of the world.
We will be expanding our program for 2017 and will continue to teach children about understanding, respect, and empathy towards all living beings.
This year, Critter Camp will run from June 19th-23rd and again from July 17th-21st. Campers are dropped off at the shelter in the morning and will rotate through four different classes each day, with an offsite field trip scheduled on Thursday.
Registration opens on May 8th, and only the first 32 children registered are guaranteed a spot.
All Proceeds for Critter Camp benefit the Hill Country SPCA, the only No-Kill shelter in our community.
