Animals Fostered
What our supporters say
Becoming a foster for an animal shelter is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. By opening your home and heart to a shelter animal in need, you have the power to change their life for the better. As a foster, you provide a safe and loving environment where they can heal, grow, and learn to trust again. Whether it's an abandoned kitten, a shy dog, or a recovering surgery patient, fostering allows you to make a significant impact on their journey towards finding their forever homes. Being a foster is about making a difference, one precious life at a time.
Volunteer
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals? Consider becoming a volunteer at our shelter. As a volunteer, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute your time and skills towards the welfare of animals in need. Whether you become a dog walker, a cat cuddler, or assist with administrative tasks, your presence and support will go a long way in creating a nurturing and loving environment for the animals.

The Hill Country SPCA is a private, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter servicing the Texas Hill Country. We are not affiliated with any other shelter or organization and receive no funding from federal or state agencies. We rely strictly on private donations and grants to continue saving the lives of the homeless, abused, and abandoned animals in our area.
We take in animals that are no longer wanted by their owners, as well as dogs and cats listed up for euthanasia at nearby animal control agencies.
-
Our animals come from a wide variety of sources! Our focus is on animals that are at risk of euthanasia with partner shelters, and as space allows we also take in owner surrenders, and on rare occasion injured stray animals. Additionally, we assist with animals needing placement from hoarding situations, cruelty investigations, and puppy mills.
-
Because the Hill Country SPCA is a “No-Kill” shelter, we will never euthanize an animal already in care to make room for another unwanted pet.
Due to our extremely limited resources we ask owners to try and make every effort to find placement for their pet. To help facilitate this the Hill Country SPCA offers “Courtesy Posts” which will list your animal as available for private adoption through you.
When space allows we work off of a waiting list for pets needing surrendered. We often are unable to intake a pet the same day we are contacted.
Please see our Pet Help page for more information. -
Once an animal is accepted in our adoption program they are not euthanized for time or space reasons. Unless there are medical or behavioral issues that develop deeming an animal un-adoptable, a cat or dog will stay in our adoption program until they find their forever home.
The policy regarding euthanasia of animals under our care is that no animal will be euthanized unless:
1. Medical Necessity: The animal is proven to have a disease or injury so severe as to be untreatable, incurable, or irreparable by currently available humane medical procedures. At least two Hill Country SPCA directors must agree, AFTER consulting with a licensed veterinarian regarding the animal’s condition, that euthanasia is indicated.
2. Dangerous aggression beyond rehabilitation: The animal is so vicious as to be a threat to other animals or human companions, and such temperament is deemed not correctable by available professional training methods. At least two Hill Country SPCA directors must agree, after consulting with an Animal Behavior Consultant, that euthanasia is indicated.
-
Our website stays up to date with available animals. Checkout the Adoption page for more information. If you have seen an animal on our social media or elsewhere that are not listed on our website we are not yet accepting applications for them, or they may have already been adopted.
We do sometimes have space to take small animals usually they are animals such as hamster, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and more! If we do, they will be listed under the Small & Furry section!
