Renting with Pets
Finding a landlord that allows pets can be difficult, Even if a landlord advertises “no pets,” some will make exceptions. It is worth asking over the phone or in person with friendly conversation, and being prepared in advance can also help!
One of the best ways to convince a potential landlord that your pet is not going to be a nuisance, or be destructive to the property, is to show them how you are a responsible pet owner, and how well behaved your pet is!
Create a “resume” for each pet that includes a photo, favorite activities, certifications and even a short adoption story. Use this free Resume Builder to help get you started! Extras could include:
a letter of reference from a current or most recent landlord.
written proof that the dog has completed a training class.
a letter from the vet showing each pet is up-to-date on vaccines and spayed or neutered.
Lastly, Invite landlords to meet the pet(s)!
If you feel that you are out of options and finding a new home is best for your pet, we encourage you to try re-homing your pet on your own rather than surrendering to a facility, and we’re here to help!
To post your pet on our website, you will need to fill out a Courtesy Post below, and we highly recommend doing so on Rehome.AdoptaPet.com as well. This will also allow hundreds of potential adopters to view your pet on "Adopt-A-Pet"!
The Rehome website can help you handle the adoption process, and provide access to safe meeting places at Petco stores. If you need assistance with the listing fee, please reach out to us! info@hillcountryspca.com
We do also recommend trying social media, flyers, and newspaper articles.

Petco Love Lost
Nearly 10 million pets go missing each year – we help them return home.
Established in 1999, Petco Love formalizes Petco’s longstanding commitment to animal welfare. We simplify the search for lost and found pets by offering a free central location to report, search, and share.
Our database includes pets reported by individuals as well as thousands of shelter partners across the country. By uploading a photo of your lost or found pet and reporting it in our system, you make that pet visible to pet parents searching for their pet – making happy pet reunions just a few clicks away.
If you might otherwise turn stray and orphaned kittens over to shelters, you can instead obtain free supplies and care instructions to save their lives. Our shelter staff will provide a free Kitten Survival Kit(While supplies last), written care instructions, and a personal orientation for care of neonatal kittens so you can be a Kitten Hero!
You can also click below for complete step-by-step care instructions from the Kitten Lady, a leading expert in Neonatal Kitten Care.
Additionally we reccomend checking out some of the Kitten Care Videos she has available on her website.
Help with Orphaned Kittens
Community cats, sometimes called free-roaming or feral cats, are common in the Hill Country. In order to help our area achieve a no-kill community, some cats are spayed/neutered and returned to the location at which they were found. This program is called “Trap Neuter Return” or “TNR” for short. Fredericksburg offers the following options for TNR:
PAWS, Pedernales Animal Welfare Society will assist you with TNR Service, Click Here for more information.
What is the difference between a community cat and a stray cat? Stray cats are former pets who are lost or have been abandoned outdoors. Community cats, or feral cats, are unsocialized cats that are not adoptable and are free-roaming outdoor cats. They often live in a colony with other community cats and have one or more caretakers who feed them. All community cats should be spayed or neutered.
How can I tell if a cat is a community cat or if it has been spayed/neutered?
Look for a missing tip on the cat’s ear. The “eartip” is a universal sign that a cat has been altered. It can be either ear. It is the humane removal of the tip of a cat’s ear to indicate is has been spayed or neutered.
How can I help community cats? The best thing you can do for a community cat is get him or her fixed via a Trap Neuter Return program. After the cat is fixed, you can continue feeding on a regular basis. We strongly recommend speaking to property owners before you begin feeding a community cat.
